School Library Orientation • Welcome! • Take the time to go through this PowerPoint. You will need the information to complete the quiz, “About Your School Library”. • You will also need the information on the School Library webpages. • The quiz is online – the link is on the Orientation page (the same page you used to get to this PP).
Welcome! • This is YOUR School Library Information Centre. • We are here to help and support you. • You are welcome to come to the SLIC before school, after school, and during lunch.
Hours • 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. • Monday – Friday • Any changes (e.g. closed for a Math Contest) will be posted on the door.
Staff • Miss Dillon – Teacher – Librarian
Miss Dillon… • certified, experienced (25th year!) teacher • additional qualifications in school librarianship (17+ years as Pocock’s TL) • understands teaching and learning, inquiry process, etc. • works with your teachers to support teaching • works with YOU to support learning • can help with book selection, inquiry / research, essay / report writing, Works Cited, presentations…all you have to do is ask • LOVES to read, so a great person to speak with if you’re looking for a book you’ll enjoy
Staff • Library Technician • Mrs. Solayman • Circulation Desk, overdues, Student Clerk program…
Staff • Student Monitor • Mrs. Spadafora • helps with supervision of students, especially during lunch periods
Other Staff Members Who Work in the School Library • Miss Carola – Settlement Worker • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:00 – 3:30 • works with Newcomer students and families
Mrs. Taylor – Social Worker • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays • 8:00 – 3:00 • works with students and families interested in making positive changes
SLIC Purpose / Role To help you develop: • information literacy / research and inquiry skills; • love of life – long learning; • love of reading.

Volunteer Opportunities • Want to earn volunteer hours? • Ask about joining the Student Library Clerks or the Book Team!
Resources • Print • encyclopedias (yes, can be signed out) • non – fiction (information books – great for projects or personal interest reading) • fiction (novels and short stories, variety of genres) • graphic works (fiction and non-fiction) • manga • picture books (great for babysitting!) • magazines (yes, can be signed out)
Resources • Non – Print • few videos, CDs, DVDs • check out the kits – lots of project resources • access to board media collection (speak to Miss Dillon if interested)
Resources • Digital • Internet • databases (school subscription, Ministry - licensed, Knowledge Ontario) • *EVERYONE in Ontario has access to the KO suite of databases through libraries! • applications (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel, Smart Ideas…) • Geometer’s Sketchpad (take home – gr. 9) • Fathom (take home – gr. 12)
Resources • Community • help finding and accessing community groups, organizations, etc.
Equipment • 25 computers • 2 data projector carts (yes, for student use!) • USB keys • printer (black and white laser) • photocopier • comb binding machine • NOTE: payment required for printing, copying, binding covers cost of materials
Policies: The Four “Rs” • Responsibility… • all school rules apply • take care of library facility, equipment, resources • return all items on time • Respect… • respect staff members • respect other library users (e.g. work quietly) • respect library environment • Research and Reading… • be quietly and productively occupied • No hanging out!
Computer Rules • Rules • sign out computer • use assigned computer • use your own account • no games / gaming sites • appropriate sites / activities only (as determined by School Library staff) • follow Network User Agreement • Consequences for breaking rules • loss of computer / library privileges • contact with teacher / VP / parents
