2.6 Adding and Subtracting Expressions Objectives: Use the Distributive Property to combine like terms. Simplify expressions with several variables. Standards Addressed: 2.1.8.B: Simplify numerical expressions. 2.1.8.E: Simplify and expand algebraic expressions.
When you add and subtract expressions, you need to write the sums and differences in simplified terms.
Combining Like Terms (3x + 4) + (5x + 2) • In an expression, parts that are added are called terms. • The terms 3x and 5x are like terms because they contain the same form of the variable x. • The numerical part of an x-term, in this case 3 or 5, is called the coefficient of the x-term. • The numbers 4 and 2, which are also like terms, are called constants. • An expression is simplified when all like terms have been combined and all parentheses have been removed.
