Project Goals • Raise Awareness: • Asthma Management • Reduce Triggers • Develop Asthma Friendly Child Care Recognition Program
Pilot Sites • Boys & Girls Clubs- General RE Woods • Boys & Girls Clubs- Yancey • Centers for New Horizons- James Pitts • Centers for New Horizons- Washington Park • Kennedy King College Child Development Lab • Lutheran Social Services of IL- Englewood Messiah
Asthma Screenings • 125 screening forms returned • 22% children had diagnosed asthma • 16% children had asthma symptoms
Staff Trainings • Asthma 101 • 6 classes completed with 141 staff trained • 96% of staff said they felt they had a better understanding of preventing common asthma triggers • 94% of staff said they had a better understanding of an appropriate response to an asthma episode • Integrated Pest Management • 5 classes completed with 104 staff trained
Parent Trainings • Asthma 101 • 5 classes with 53 parents trained • 90% of parents felt that they had a better understanding of an appropriate response to an asthma episode • 88% of parents felt they had a better understanding of controller and reliever medications • Integrated Pest Management • 4 classes with 42 parents trained • Second Hand Smoke
Positive Findings from Site Assessments • All centers enforce anti-idling laws • 5 centers modified children’s activities on Air Pollution Action Days • All centers utilize tile flooring throughout the facility and area rugs where necessary • 4 centers do major cleaning after hours
