  1. Class 9 – Sep 18 foundations of engineering design I Our Dental Processes, Functional Decompositions, Oral Presentation Prep

  2. today’s plan • pin up practice assignments • examine our processes • functional decomposition • professional oral presentations • quick online assessment • assignments & announcements

  3. engineering is all around us Prof. Lande goes to the dentist…

  4. think like an engineer. notice needs notice opportunities

  5. your dental hygiene routines pin up on the wall

  6. take a few minutes to look over the dental hygiene processes pinned up on the wall

  7. what are differences between them? what are some surprises? what are key needs you see for our culture’s dental hygiene?

  8. what are differences what are surprises identify key needs

  9. select another’s process brainstorm+sketch a way to save them time during the day

  10. functional decomposition electric toothbrush cleans teeth, but how?

  11. functional breakdown ID functions ID structure/parts connect functions to parts

  12. functional breakdown connect to parts list

  13. example can opener

  19. make a function-structure diagram for an electric toothbrush. use the provided handout to help.

  21. oral communication

  22. course competency “deliver an oral message or presentation appropriate to the audience, within the specified time constraint, and using appropriate visual aids”

  23. other than the fact that it’s a competency, why is effective oral communication important to engineers? take a few minutes to record your thoughts.

  24. pair – share why is effective communication important?

  25. oral presentation types • Informative • describes the design process used by the team in developing the process/tools used in the Olympic cauldron project • Persuasive • tries to convince the audience that their team’s process was best • Instructional • explains how to operate the tool the team used to move cups

  26. You will each be giving a presentation about a particular manufacturing process to your teammates What type of presentation do you think this will be?

  27. presentation musts • time • organization / content • slide appearance

  28. time • include enough content to effectively use your time • don’t go over time • practice to meet time requirement

  29. content/organization • sandwich structure • tell a story • use and discuss graphics

  30. slide appearance what are some ways you can ensure appropriate and professional slide appearance in a presentation?

  31. report out what are ways to ensure professional slide appearance? share your team’s two best responses to the prompt

  32. slide appearance • font size • text/background contrast • no information overload • use appropriate graphics and animation

  33. font size eye chart 18 Pt Font 24 Pt Font 28 Pt Font 32 Pt Font 36 Pt Font 40 Pt Font 48 Pt Font 60 Pt Font

  35. too much information leads to too little information

  36. Attempt to Land Captain Fuchs aircraft was too high and too close to the airport to perform a landing so he was forced to circle the airport until he could reduce his air speed and altitude. In attempt to slow his aircraft he extended the flaps but only the inner wing flaps extended because the hydraulic system to extend the outer flaps had been damaged when the engine separated from the wing. This caused the wing to have a greater pitch angle when landing. The sudden drop in airspeed caused the plane to bank to the right. In an attempt to save the plane, Captain Fuchs increased the engine power, in turn dooming himself and the crew.

  37. pictures & graphics use them, but cite the source of and discuss them http://www.damninteresting.net/content/gertie_man.jpg

  38. animation/graphics are useful, but… • not all animation adds to the presentation • not all graphics add to the presentation

  39. spll check miss pselledwrods and poor grammer is not aceptabel in a proffessional presentation!

  40. presentation wants • informative • quality references • knowledgeable / confident presenter

  41. informative how can you make your presentations informative? you’ll be presenting on manufacturing processes

  42. report out what are ways to make your presentation on a manufacturing process informative? share your team’s two best responses to the prompt

  43. informative • shows process at work • clearly discusses strengths/limitations of process • contains all requested info • asks for questions

  44. quality references how can you demonstrate the quality of the references in your presentation?

  45. report out how can you demonstrate the quality of the references in your presentation? share your team’s two best responses to the prompt

  46. quality references • reference list is presented • references include more than wikipedia and newspapers • quality of the references and/or authors is established

  47. confident speaker what are the characteristics of a confident speaker?
