How to Write an Opinion Essay You have learned the 5 part essay, now we will learn how to apply this to an opinion paper.
Outline • State your opinion in the first paragraph. • Try to avoid using “I think” or “I believe” because you are writing the paper, it IS your opinion. • Use a graphic organizer to state your opinion (or thesis statement). You can see Ms. Ingalls for this. • Support your thoughts with examples and/or facts.
Introduction • You need to hook your reader in. • Your hook will be more like the beginning of a short story than an essay. • Show your reader you have something important to say. • Humour is common and welcomed in an opinion paper. • Link your opinion to current events, if possible.
Revising • Underline your reasons in one color. • Underline your facts and examples in another color. • Do you have enough details to support each reason? • Try to put each reason in it’s own paragraph with supporting details/facts.
Note • If you are stating an opinion about a piece of literature (a novel, a work of non-fiction), then be sure to reference your facts and/or examples properly from the book. • Your title page will be required in the proper format.
