  1. The story so far… • Physics describes your world • We can measure our world • We use numbers and units to describe our world • Next • Measuring your position • Measuring how your position changes with time

  2. Position • Where you are • Place on a map • Place on an xy coordinate system

  3. Distance • Total amount traveled • Doesn’t matter what direction you are moving • Measured in meters

  4. Displacement • Displacement is change in position • Distance from a fixed point • This is a new idea for you • Change in position = final position-initial position • Δx = x2 – x1 = xf - xi • Displacement has both magnitude and direction • If the fixed point is the origin (0,0), displacement and position are the same

  5. Define • Position • Distance • Displacement

  6. Speed • Distance traveled in time (distance/time) • Speed is a scalar • Direction doesn’t matter • m/s, km/h, miles per hour • Motion is relative • Average speed: • total distance/total time • Instantaneous speed: • part of distance/part of time

  7. Velocity • Has both speed and direction – it is a vector! • Change in velocity • change in speed (magnitude) • change in direction • Average Velocity • (where you finish – where you start)/ time to move • total displacement/total time • Instantaneous velocity • part of displacement/part of time • same magnitude as instantaneous speed but has direction

  8. Compare and Contrast • Speed • Velocity • When are they the same? • When are they different?

  9. Speed Equations VelocityEquations

  10. Instantaneous velocity (m/s) 0s to10s 10s to 20s 20s to 45s 45s to 60s Ave Velocity (0s-60s) Ave Speed (0s-60s)
