Lab Safety Fun for everyone!
Labs are one of the BEST parts of science… • BUT, there are rules we have to follow to make sure that we can all stay SAFE WHILE DOING LABS
The most important thing you can always do in the lab is to LISTEN!!! • I will always give you instructions BEFORE we enter the lab • We will ALWAYS go over the procedure and rules BEFORE we enter the lab • While we’re IN the lab, please ALWAYS be listening in case I need your attention for any reason
What if something happens while the teacher is not in the lab? • This should never happen (I won’t leave you in the lab unsupervised) BUT, if it does… • Do NOT panic!!! • If it’s NOT an emergency (broken glass, a small spill, etc), alert the people around you and tell me as soon as I return – do not touch the broken glass or spill until I return • If it IS an emergency, follow proper lab safety procedures and have a student find me or the closest teacher for help
What if something happens to the teacher? • Again, this should never happen but if it does… • Do NOT panic • Find the nearest teacher and have them come help
In case of an emergency… • Do NOT panic!!! • Stop what you are doing and immediately head to the appropriate piece of emergency equipment that you need (fire extinguisher, fire blanket, eyewash station, etc) • ALWAYS make sure that the teacher is notified
In case of a non-lab emergency (like a fire or earthquake drill…) • Stop what you are doing immediately. • Turn off your bunsen burner (if you’re using one) • Stay quiet and listen to the teacher for further instructions • Follow the usual school procedures for drills • Do NOT panic!
Fire extinguishers • If there is a fire, I will be the one to use the extinguisher but… • When to use it: if the fire is small and controlled • How to use it: grab the extinguisher by the handle and pull the safety pin sharply aim at the BASE of the flames and pull the trigger sweep the spray back and forth several times • NEVER: spray a fire extinguisher ON A PERSON the spray can freeze flesh or get into eyes or lungs
Eyewash station • When to use it: any time a chemical or solution gets into the eyes yell for help and go to the eyewash station • How to use it: push the paddle (it says PUSH) and put your face into the stream of water so it hits your eyes DIRECTLY wash for AT LEAST 10 mins • NEVER: play around with the eyewash station
Emergency shower • When to use it: when hazardous chemicals spray over a large area of the body • How to use it: get under the shower and pull the handle affected clothing MUST be removed after washing • NEVER: treat the emergency shower like a toy
Fire blanket • When to use it: when a student’s clothing or hair catches fire can also be used to smother burning material on the floor or a bench • How to use it: pull the cord at the bottom to release the blanket • NEVER: wrap a STANDING PERSON in a fire blanket this can bring the fire directly into the person’s face
