Hunting Today • In Minnesota Pittman-Robertson money has been primarily been used for the acquisition of wildlife habitat in wildlife management areas. • About 550,000 acres in 85 of our 87 counties.
Hunting Today • Other projects include development work in WMA’s • Building Dams, waterfowl impoundments, fences, and roads, planting trees and creating nesting plots. • Every species has been helped. • Pittman-Robertson funds do not pay for law enforcement or for stocking.
Hunting Today • About 1/5 of the wildlife budget come from these funds. • Minnesota is in the top 10 states in terms of the amount of money received from Pittman-Robertson.
Hunting Today • Wildlife Management Areas • WMA’s are like a system of banks. • Handles wildlife • In 1951 the nations first Save the Wetlands program started in Minnesota. • 1000 acres
Hunting Today • Save the wetlands was initially financed by hunting license fees, and later by a special surcharge on small game hunting licenses. • More recently, general fund support has been received through special legislative appropriations in the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) Program.
Hunting Today • Establishing a new WMA depends upon four factors. • 1. Suitable land • 2. A willing seller • 3. Sufficient acquisition money • 4. And approval from the local county board of commissioners
Hunting Today • Inability to achieve any of these 4 factors will result in failure • Exceptions to this are tracts of land which are gifts to the DNR • Acquiring land for a WMA takes time • Field inspections, landowner contract, county board meetings, appraisal, negotiations, and internal paperwork.
Hunting Today • Many WMA’s contain valuable habitat at the time of purchase. • Others require extensive development that may be postponed until funding becomes available. • Other areas can be immediately improved be seeding dense nesting cover or eliminating grazing.
