Homework • H.W. #5 (Egypt Part 3) due tomorrow
Aim: How did geography shape the world view of Ancient Egypt? • Do Now: Read the handout Hymn to the Nile and answer the two questions at the bottom of the sheet.
I. Geography of Egypt • Bordered by: Mediterranean Sea (North) Red Sea (East) B. 95 % desert C. 5 % oases watered by the Nile River
I. Geography of Egypt D. The Nile River • Longest river in the world (4,100 miles) • Flows north, empties into Mediterranean. • Annual flooding in September/October→ deposits silt. • Divides Egypt into two regions: Upper Egypt (south→Nile Valley) and Lower Egypt (north→Nile Delta→most fertile land)
I. Geography of Egypt E. In what ways can the Nile River help Egypt to develop as a civilization?:
Egypt: Nile River (predictability of the flooding) → Natural Boundaries → View of the Gods → How will these factors influence their ultimate world view → Mesopotamia: Tigris/Euphrates Rivers (predictability of the flooding)→ Natural Boundaries → View of the Gods → How will these factors influence their ultimate world view →
II. Egyptian Religion • Egyptians were polytheistic→ Believe in sun gods, land gods and river gods. • Re / Ra → Sun God. An Egyptian ruler was “Son of Ra.” • Osiris → God of the harvest and the afterlife. Symbol of rebirth. • Isis – Wife of Osiris. Together, the two ruled over the dead. • Annubis – Would weigh the hearts of the dead against a feather. If their heart was lighter than a feather, they would get to the afterlife. If it was heavier, they would be devoured by Ammit (female demon that was part lion, part hippopotamus, part crocodile).
