“Heptavex” was the first commercial Hep B vaccine Involved taking plasma from infected donors and making a vaccine Use of this vaccine was discontinued in 1990 1981-First Hep B Vaccination
August 12, 1981—IBM PC • In July of 1980, IBM met with Bill Gates to create an operating system for their top secret project, the Personal Computer • Project code name was “Project Chess” • Computer code name “Acorn” • 16-256 KB memory • $1,565.00
December 2, 1982-Jarvik 7 • Robert J. Jarvik designed this artificial heart • Dentist Dr. Barney Clark was hours from death. After implantation he lived for 112 more days.

1983-Compact Disc • 8 tracks are quickly becoming a thing of the past • Cassettes aren’t as durable as everyone would like • CDs can be put through the dishwasher, much more durable, and have better sound quality than cassettes
1985-NES • Nintendo, originally a playing card company introduces the Nintendo Entertainment System to Japan in 1983 • Introduced to the US in 1985 and sold more than 60 million of game systems. • Zelda and Mario
1985-Famine in Ethiopia • 5.8 million people dependant on relief • Ethiopian government unwilling to send relief into rebel areas • Condemnation from world community • Force resettlement
1985-Hole in Ozone Layer • British scientists Joesph Farman, Brian Gardiner, and Jonathan Shanklin of the British Antarctic Survey.
1986-Challenger Explodes • 9 successful missions • 73 seconds into the mission when it exploded • 7 members in the crew died • Regan gave a moving speech • The Discovery resumed missions in 1988
1987-DNA Used in Court • Colin Pitchfork first person convicted using DNA evidence
1988-Drought • Effected 36% of America at it’s peak • Lasted from 1987-1989 • Most expensive natural disaster for the US estimated at $39 billion • Detrimental effects for farmers • Yellowstone National Park Fire
November 9,1989-Berlin Wall Falls • Construction began in 1961 • Communisum and USSR began to collapse in the early 80’s • “Private trips abroad” spread like wildfire and an unyielding mob finally broke down the wall
