Chapter 1Types and components of Computer Systems:Hardware, Software and computer types
WALT • Know the difference between hardware and software. WILF • All students will be to provide examples of hardware and software. (Grade E/D). • Most will know the different types of computers (Grade D/C). • Some students will be able identify the advantages and disadvantages of different types of computer (Grade B/A).
Starter • Can you remember? • What is the difference between hardware and software? • Give three examples of software. • Give three examples of hardware.
Hardware DEFINITION: "All the physical parts of a computer that you can see, touch and pick up.“
Direct Changeover • The old system is stopped completely, and the new system is started. All of the data that used to be input into the old system, now goes into the new one. • This is has its advantages: • Takes the minimal time and effort • The new system is up and running immediately • But there are also disadvantages... • If the new system fails, there is no back-up system, so data can be lost
Software DEFINITION: "Computer data that is stored electronically and not physically.“ Software cannot be touched or picked up. It refers to the programs that we run on our computer and it tells the hardware how to do something useful. Software is basically a set of instructions (written in a computer language) that tells the hardware what to do. Without software, most hardware would be useless. There are 2 types of software - System Software and Application Software.
Difference between Hardware and Software Computer hardware is the physical components that make up the computer system. Hardware is useless without software to run on it.Software is instructions that tell computer hardware what to do. Software is useless unless there is hardware to run it on.For a computer system to be useful it has to consist of both hardware and software.
Task 1 and 2 1 . Open task 1 and correctly identify the different examples of hardware and software. 2. Open task 2 and write down as many examples of hardware/software you can think of
Types of Computer What is a Computer? "Computers are devices that accept information and then manipulate it to produce a result."
Lesson Task: 3 Follow the instructions given on the worksheet. Make sure that you complete both parts of the task sheet.
