What is AS/RS ? Definition (1) - An AS/RS is a combination of equipment and controls which handles, stores, and retrieves materials with precision, accuracy, and speed under a defined degree of automation. (Materials Handling Institute) Definition (2) - AS/RS systems transport, stage, retrieve, and report on every inventory item with up-to-the minute accuracy Definition (3) – The Basic AS/RS consists of a rack structure for storing loads and a storage/retrieval mechanism whose motions are linear (x-y-z, motions). Some Current Types of AS/RS • Unit load AS/RS - Large automated system designed to use S/R machines to move unit loads on pallets into and out of storage racks. • Deep-Lane AS/RS – High-density unit load storage system, designed to store large amounts of stock with relatively little amounts of stock types. It generally stores ten or more loads in a single rack with the input on one side and output on the other • Mini-load AS/RS - Smaller automated system designed to move smaller loads into and out of storage bins or drawers. • Man-on-board AS/RS - Uses personnel to pick items from racks or bins, reducing transaction time. • Automated item retrieval system - Items to be moved are stored in single file lanes, rather than in bins or drawers. • Vertical lift storage modules –same principle of using a center aisle to access loads is used except that the aisle is vertical. Helps to save floor space

Standards • MHIA – Material Handling Industry of America • They develop and promote standard nomenclature • They develop and promote codes for equipment operation, fire prevention, personnel safety, etc. • There are currently only two ANSI safety standards for AS/RS related technologies • MH24.1: Safety Standard for Horizontal Carousel Material Handling and Associated EquipmentThis newest standard, approved January 15, 2005, for horizontal carousels, was developed by the Carousel and Vertical Lift Module (C/VLM) Working Group of the AS/RS Product Section following the ANSI Public Canvass method. • B30.13 - 2003: Storage/Retrieval (S/R) Machines and Associated Equipment This AS/RS safety standard published in 2003 deals solely with the Crane and Aisle (C/A) technology for automatic storage and retrieval. This standard, also following the ANSI Public Canvass method, was developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Integration • Automated storage/retrieval systems are custom designed for each application. • At the most sophisticated level, the operations are totally automated, computer controlled, and fully integrated with the factory and/or warehouse operations. • At the other extreme human workers control the equipment and perform the storage/retrieval transactions.
Class Application Sizing an AS/RS System • Each aisle of a four-aisle AS/RS contains 60 storage compartments in the length direction and 12 compartments vertically. All storage compartments have the dimension of x = 42 in, y = 48 in, z = 36 in. using the allowances, a = 6 in, b = 8 in, c = 10 in, determine how many unit loads can be stored in the AS/RS • Eq. (11.1) Capacity per aisle = 2(ny)(nz) = 2(60)(12) = 1,440 unit loads, and with four aisles, the total capacity = 4(1,440) = 5,760 unit loads.
