  4. What are today’s objectives? • Content: Student-teachers will be able to identify the parts of a graph. • Language: Student-teachers will be able to name the parts of a graph. • Technology: Student-teachers will be able to construct a graph using Microsoft Excel.

  5. What is a graph? • We use graphs to compare and contrast between things. • What does compare and contrast mean? • It means to show how things are the same (compare) and how things are different (contrast).

  7. What is a graph? • There are four basic types of graphs- pictographs, bar graphs, line graphs, and circle (pie graphs) • Graphs are great because you can show information quickly without having to write a lot.

  9. Pictographs • A pictograph uses pictures to represent what is being counted. • Picture + graph = PICTOGRAPH

  13. Bar Graphs • Bar graphs and pictographs are alike because they both compare and contrast by showing how many or how much. • Bar graphs use colors to show how many or how much. • Pictographs use pictures to show how many or how much.

  14. When to use Bar graphs or Pictographs • Since bar graphs and pictographs show how many of something, you would want to use them when… • You are organizing things into groups. • You are counting the number of people that either like something or dislike something.
