Overarching Guidance - Systematic development of an understanding and acceptance of NASA as a provider of educational high quality higher education resources and materials, opportunities and experiences. This awareness by the agency is pivotal in ESS Education. A NASA climate that expresses a support of education by all divisions and sections. Activities accomplished through collaborations between colleges, universities, community colleges, research institutions, education consortiums (such as Space Grant, Sea Grant, Land Grant), and state education agencies. Construction and use of processes and products should involve collaborations among partners and resources should be available to all educational institutions. Higher Education Integrate ESS concepts and inquiry-based approaches in advanced courses for undergraduate majors and graduates Students in advanced courses are better prepared for roles in ESS workforce Improved geoscience education courses for students majoring in geoscience at undergrad and grad levels Design interventions to mitigate resistance to inquiry based learning at these levels Programs ready for implementation at the graduate level to promote inquiry based learning more broadly Assess upper-level instruction for learning approaches, increase awareness of inquiry-based learning approaches, advocate for change Graduate education faculty aware of need for reform of learning approaches and ready to participate in change National educator/scientist collaboratives underway to improve ESS education Professional development for geoscience educators for the undergraduate/graduate community (scientists/grad students teaching at undergrad level as well as education faculty and grad students) Build functional natl scientist/educator learning community Reward system for university faculty - implement Faculty rewarded for advancing ESS education Establish on-going learning communities between scientists and educators Collaborative efforts between education and science faculty to improve ESS education Program developed in collaboration with Universities Reward system for university faculty - design Improved Higher Education in Earth System Science Establish communication bridges across organizational cultures Scientists and educators become aware of each others roles, research interests, and potential contributions to collaborative educational enhancement in the geosciences. Reward system for university faculty - awareness University systems and faculty aware of the need to include work education enhancement toward merit advancement Educate faculty in student-centered teaching and facilitating inquiry Faculty aware of the need for reform in teaching and ready to engage in improved practice Improved geoscience education courses for non-majors in Earth System Science All students have the opportunity to engage in projects that demonstrate the need for and impact of ESS Integrate service-learning projects into courses for non-majors Increase number and scope of ESS modules/courses for non-majors including learning through inquiry A broader understanding of ESS by all learners at undergraduate level, with impact on future workforce ACTIONS OUTCOMES NEEDS (0-3 YRS) (3-6 YRS) (6-10 YRS)
Improved geoscience education courses for non-majors and majors in Earth system science • course improvements should emphasize integration of inquiry-based approaches • Professional development of geoscience educators (science and education faculty) for the undergraduate/graduate community • NASA should undertake efforts to encourage • science faculty to implement student-centered teaching and facilitating inquiry, • universities and colleges to reward faculty engaged in education reform, • and support communities of collaborating scientists and educators, and • higher education programs to require more science content for future educators Higher Education Roadmap Highlights
Activities should be accomplished through appropriate collaborations between colleges, universities, community colleges, research institutions, educational consortia, and state education agencies. • Construction and use of processes and products should involve collaborations among partners and resources should be available to all educational institutions. • Historically underserved populations are particularly in need at the higher education level. Activities focused on Tribal Colleges, Minority Serving Institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities are particularly effective for reaching these scientists of tomorrow.
