WageIndicator survey • Target population • wage-earners, self-employed and job-seekersin the formal and informal labour market • Questionnaire with 67-85 questions • occupation and education • place of work • employment history • working hours • employment contract and salary • personal questions • each section ends with a set of attitude items

Voluntary no random sampling from target population no response rates screening of target population weighting to correct for bias Reduce dropping out easy wording, positive phrasing nice design, consistent layout addressing all groups in target populations complex routing, addressing atypical groups Using the Internet for Surveys

Working hours measured • standard week at workplace • contractual hours • weekly working hours agreed with employer • not asked for full-timers with agreed hours  contractual hrs = standard wk • usual weekly hours • not asked for full/part-timers with agreed hours and usually not working the number of agreed hours • for all others asked, if agreed hours  usual hours - contractual hours = overtime • actual weekly hours • asked only as yes/no working usual hours in the past seven days • waged weekly hours • asked after questions about wage

Calculating hourly wage • hours input based on • a checked hours-measure based on contractual / usual / waged hours • gross wage divided by payment period • control for overtime • approx 40-50% of full-timers with overtime have unpaid overtime • approx 90% of part-timers with ‘overtime’ have paid ‘overtime’ • > subtract overtime allowances (if reported) from wage • control for annual bonuses received in month of survey

Atypical cases • annualised or flexible hours • measured as median of minimum / maximum hours per wk • if no data min. or max. hours per week ???? • if only annual hours available? • self-employed • only values for usual hours • piece-rate workers • exclude if piece rate is 80-100% of gross wage

  9. Paid vacation and holidays • Normally included in wage for payment period >= 1 week (?) • no check whether this is included • Paid vacation ranges from • few days to seven weeks a year • Paid holidays ranges from • 7 to 20? days a year • How to include in the calculated hourly wages?
