The efficient creation of e-learning resources: Course Genie – A Case Study Luke Bracegirdle, eLearning Fellow (Faculty of Health) e: l.bracegirdle@mema.keele.ac.uk | t: 4135
School of Pharmacy eLearning Project: An Overview • Paper based educational materials used for distance learning • Creation of a repository of educational materials for a growing online resource • Course content authors are often distributed by time and geographic location • A process that requires a minimum of training for external authors • Materials were not available in standard file formats
Paper materials scannedfor sending to authors Authors are sentlatest version ofmaterials for editing The document is returned to be transformed using Course Genie Materials are published incourses and feedback collectedfor next revision Course Genie publishes the document in a VLE-ready format Published materials are uploaded for review by the Course Team
Why Course Genie? • Separation of the content from the VLE • Reuses existing IT skills through the use of familiar software tools • no need for authors to learn WebCT • Allows units to be sent electronically to be updated by authors • Supports a standard delivery of content (e.g. accessibility concerns, visual consistency)
School of Pharmacy eLearning Project: Improving the Process • OCR Software introduces layout issues • Version Management • Course Genie ‘quirks’ • Selective Training address specific requirements • Training for CG to a wider audience than our IT staff • Include interactive elements provided in Course Genie for next iteration
School of Pharmacy eLearning Project: Next Steps • Continue process for other materials • Publishing units in the WebCT repository • Analyse student feedback • how online units compare to paper based units?
