Peter was in immediate danger of a spiritual disaster… • "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." Luke 22:31-32
Your life is like a rocket. It has the potential to… • Blast off – It can soar to the heavens. • Blow up – It can disintegrate before has a chance to leave the launch pad. • Flame out – It can have a good start, but quickly fall to earth. • Spin out – It can take off, but go off course.
Blast Off What does a life look like that is burning for God? What is the “match” that will light your burner? Hint: See the devotion for Christ found in Philippians 1:21 “Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
In stead of “blasting off”, a life can be ruined in a moment before it has a chance to get started. What are some moral choices that can ruin a life? What are some mental choices that can ruin a life? Blow Up
A life can start well but “flame out” – that is, the fire dies in mid-flight when the fuel to the engine is cut off. Flame Out
The Holy Scriptures are the high octane “fuel” that runs your spiritual life. What is the octane rating of the spiritual fuels that are you putting into your tank?
Mis-guided Are you a rocket that is flying fast, but in the wrong direction? The Scriptures provide us with a pathway of steps of obedience that every believer should take…
Salvation Baptism Assembly Fellowship Worship Service The Scriptures provide us with a pathway of steps of obedience … Are you not saved? Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Matthew 6:33 Are you saved, but not baptized? Obey the Lord in this first step of obedience as a believer. Are you baptized, but not in an assembly of believers? Obey the Lord by gathering together with others to His name. Are you in an assembly, but not participating? “God seeks those to worship him” John 4:23 Are you participating in worship, but not helping in the work of the assembly? Push your “activate” button and get involved.
Conclusion… • Blow up – You can disintegrate before having a chance to leave the launch pad. • Flame out – You can have a good start, but quickly fall to earth. • Spin out – You can take off, but go off course. • Blast off – You can soar to the heavens following His guidance program.
Object lesson- Note to presenter / teacher: • Introduce this lesson with an object lesson - a package of balloons. • #1 Fully inflate a balloon and hold the end closed. Give it to a participant and tell him/her to try and fly the balloon to a table (or other goal) on the opposite side of the room. The balloon will fly wildly around and room and most likely will land far from its target. • #2 Give another participant a balloon that has very little air in it. Give him/her the same goal. The balloon will fly a very short distance and fall limp to the floor. • #3 Fully inflate another balloon and hold the end closed. Hide in your hand a sharp object. When you give the balloon to the next volunteer, pop the balloon. • #4 If you can find and purchase a package of “Rocket Balloons” or create a guided balloon with a string, tape and a drinking straw (see picture), your final volunteer can successfully reach the destination. • Each of these balloons represents one of the rockets in the lesson: Misguided, Flame Out, Blow Up and Take Off.
