HOW DID IT START?. In 1976, when Poland was still ruled by communists, a group of parishioniers from the Lord's Ark church in Nowa Huta (near Cracow) led by a journalist and a philosopher - Halina Bortnowska, began to provide care for the dying in a local hospital ? the first informal hospice service in Eastern Europe (Clark 2002).
