Use the Four-Step Plan HOME IMPROVEMENTThe Vorhees family plans to paint the wall in their family room. They need to cover 512 square feet with two coats of paint. If a 1-gallon can of paint covers 220 square feet, how many 1-gallon cans of paint should they purchase? UnderstandSince they will be using two coats of paint, we must double the area to be painted. PlanThey will be covering 512 × 2 square feet or 1,024 square feet. Next, divide 1,024 by 220 to determine how many cans of paint are needed. Example 1
Use the Four-Step Plan Solve 1,024 ÷ 220 ≈ 4.7 cans Since they will purchase a whole number of cans of paint, round 4.7 to 5. Answer: They will need to purchase 5 cans of paint. CheckFive cans of paint will cover 5 × 220 or 1,100 square feet. So, the answer is reasonable. Example 1

Use the Four-Step Plan SolveAlaska = 615,230 – 570,374 = 44,856 Texas = 267,277 – 261,914 = 5,363 California = 158,869 – 155,973 = 2,896 Montana = 147,046 – 145,556 = 1,490 New Mexico = 121,598 – 121,364 = 234 Answer: New Mexico has the smallest area of water with 234 square miles. CheckCompare the water area for each state to determine which state has the least water area. Example 2
