Deadlines • Registration forms due to Jenni Picard, YWP Chair: November 21, 2012 • Participants submit class winner to local council vice president: March 2, 2013 • Local Council winners due to Jenni Picard, YWP Chair, for state judging: March 15, 2013 • State winners announced: March 21, 2013 • State winners invited to attend awards ceremony at spring NDRA conference in Jamestown April 13, 2013
Grades K-1 Choose one of your favorite Brothers Grimm fairy tales from the list and write about why it is your favorite. • Jack and the Beanstalk • Little Red Riding Hood • The Princess and the Pea • Rapunzel
Grades k-1 Guidelines: • What do you like about the story? • What did you like about the characters? Give 1 example of a character’s trait or action that you liked. • What lesson did you learn from the story? • 3-5 sentences in length • May draw a picture of your fairy tale choice to include with your writing. • Please make an effort to refrain from using Disney versions of fairy tales.
Grades 2-3 • Write an original fairy tale story modeled after a Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale. Fairy Tale pattern: • Some type of magic is used. • There is a lesson to be learned. • Should include magical creatures or people.
Grades 2-3 Guidelines: • Minimum 2 paragraphs. • Typed or hand written. • May tell the story from any character’s perspective or use a narrator to tell the story. • Should include a beginning, middle and end. • Should include story elements such as setting, characters, problem and solution. • Please make an effort to refrain from using Disney versions of fairy tales.
Write a fractured fairy tale based on one of the following stories: • Jack and the Beanstalk • Little Red Riding Hood • The Princess and the Pea Grades 4-5 Must include the following fairy tale elements: *Some type of magic is used *There is a lesson to be learned *Should include magical creatures or people
Grades 4-5 Writing guidelines: • Word Choice: words and sentences that promote “show, not tell” • Voice: clever voice shines throughout the writing. • Fractured interpretation of original story; may include alternate plot lines, settings, and endings. • Minimum 4 paragraphs. • May tell the story from any character’s perspective or use a narrator. • Shows strong imagination that weaves throughout the story elements. • Please make an effort to refrain from using Disney versions of fairy tales.
Grades 6-8 Choose one of the following stories from the fairy tale list and rewrite it in Haiku poetry. • Rapunzel • Hansel and Gretel • Snow White Guidelines: • Follow the story line, but use your words to retell. • Word choice: words should flow well and be descriptive. • Voice: clever or serious voice in your retell. • 15-21 lines in length or 5-7 sets of Haiku. • Please make an effort to refrain from using Disney versions of fairy tales.
Grades 6-8 Haiku pattern: Line 1: 5 syllables Line 2: 7 syllables Line 3: 5 syllables
Grades 9-12 Retell one of the following Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a free verse poem. • Fairy Tale Choices: • Rumpelstiltskin • Little Red Riding Hood • Sleeping Beauty
Grades 9-12 Guidelines: • 25 lines minimum/ no word limit • Word choice: descriptive language used to recreate the tale in your own words • Voice: clever or serious voice may be used • Unique in presentation and retell • Interpretation of the fairy tale may be written from any character’s point of view • Please make an effort to refrain from using Disney versions of fairy tales.
