  2. Why do we stand watch? • To protect our shipmates • To protect government property • To keep any foreign threats at bay • To instill responsibility into one’s self

  3. How do you stand watch? • The basic principles for standing watch are outlined in your General Orders of the Sentry • Keep vigilant for anything that seems suspicious • Question any person that approaches you

  4. In the watch log record every events that happens • If nothing has happened record every 15 minutes that everything is all clear • Do not skip lines in the watch log • Always use all capital letters and military time

  5. Questioning People • When someone approaches you while on watch you should respond with, “Halt, Identify yourself” • If the person responds with their rank and name and you can identify the name have them step forward with their I.D. out so you can confirm who they are then you may let them pass

  6. Relieving the watch • When it is 15 minutes to the next watch the watch stander (or in the case of 2 watch standers only send one watch stander) should wake up his/her relief • Be sure to record the time you went to wake up your relief • If your relief doesn’t wake up for his/her watch inform the JOOD/OOD

  7. Relieving cont. • When your relief arrives to relieve you the process will be: • Relief: (Salute) “I am here to relieve you” • Watch Stander: (Returns Salute) “I stand relieved” • At which time the watch stander will pass on information given to him/her to their relief
