« Zoom sur les métiers des mathématiques »(Professions with mathematics) Booklet realized by 4 french mathematical associations : SMF, SMAI, SFdS and « femmes et mathématiques » (January 2007) Partnership with Onisep (National Office of Information on Education and Professions)
Our sponsors • Ministery of National Education • « Haute-Normandie » Region • INRIA (National Institute of Research in Informatic and Automatic) • Rennes Metropolis • Bertin Technologies • Sofinnova • Ilog • Research Federation in Mathematical Sciences (Paris) • Doctoral School in Mathematical Sciences (Paris-center) • INRA (National Institute of Agronomic Research) • Bouygues SA • IMACS
Aim Show that mathematics • Play an essentialrole in many sectors of activity (not usually well known and which does not only deal with research and teaching) • Offer many possibilities of jobs, even with only 2 years in university (sometimes with only a technical certification) • Are not reserved to males ! Finally, the mathematical formation (preciness, rigour …) is very well appreciated in industry, services ...
Target • Pupils, students • Their parents • Their professors and people in charge of their orientation Justification of the partnership with Onisep (distribution within secondary schools, high schools, universities …) Distribution among professors (APMEP)
Editorial : Mathematics are everywhere ! • Omnipresent in industry (aerospace, imaging, cryptography …), in services (bank, insurance, …) • Math appear in various sectors of activity : study of risks, data protection, polls … • They interact with our life, every day (transport, telecommunications, medecine, meteorology, music …) • They contribute to adressing important challenges of the future (energy, health, environment, climatology, …) • Jobs accessible from two years after high school
Contents : introductive pages Mathematics are useful with : - they furnish to other sciences an efficient language and tools (solve equations, derive, integrate …) - they play an essential role in the development of new technologies which transform our daily life : mobile phones, internet, meteo, smart cards, medical imaging,… - they help adressing important challenges : energy, global warming, sustainable development… - they develop rigour, reasoning, intuition, imagination, and (why not ?) dreams …
Contents : introductives pages Mathematics : for which job? • Various sectors of activity :traditional sectors (meteorology …) and transverse sectors (security, fiability-quality, …) • Jobs with strong added value (high technology, research and development …) • Jobs accessible from 20 years old (or less) • Many opportunities for the next years (many retired persons …)
Contents : 20 single sheet « job descriptions » 20 profiles of young people (31,5 ans) who recently started a job with a formation essentially based on mathematics Level of study : 3 from technical institutes (IUT), 9 from university, 8 from engineer schools 3 with 2 or 3 years after high school, 10 with 4 or 5 years, 7 with a thesis (8 years) Profiles splitted in two groups : • the « favorite » sectors • the « horizontal » sectors Pages of formation + lexicum
