THEMES • • Exile • “How wretched I was, drifting through winter / On an ice-cold sea, whirled in sorrow, Alone in a world blown clear of love . . .” • • Fate (acceptance - the brave one goes out to meet it) • “. . .Wondering what Fate has willed and will do” • • Glorification of the past (elegy) • “Gone are the days when the kingdoms of earth flourished in glory. . .”

POETIC DEVICES Strong rhythm, often four accented syllables* “in icy bands, bound with frost’ Caesura* - a pause in the middle of a line “I put myself back on the paths of the sea” Alliteration - repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words “Orchards blossom, the towns bloom . . .” Assonance - repetition of vowel sounds “With frozen chains, and hardship groaned . . .” Kenning - metaphorical names in compound form “whale road” “terror monger” * important for wandering poets who chanted aloud, so that lyrics could be easily memorized (Examples in this presentation come from “The Seafarer” and Beowulf)
