Discussion on Simulation studies Lidar Working Group Meeting Bar Harbor, August 2010
Targets • GWOS or ISS? • “Generic wind observations” vs. technology specific: Coherent, Direct Detection, or both (Hybrid)? • Single-perspective or full vector winds(bi-perspective, scanning, etc.)?
Domain (NR and assimilation systems)? • Global • Advantages: Signature of observing system is unequivocal; easy comparison both nationally and internationally for robustness of results; most advanced assimilation methodology, including treatment of satellite data • Disadvantages: Scale of phenomena for which impact is desired may not be well captured; widely used metrics often perceived as irrelevant by end users • Limited area (meso-scale) • Advantages: Can be targeted to desired spatial and temporal scales; can be focused on desired regions • Disadvantages: Rudimentary treatment of satellite data; signature of observing systems is often ambiguous; in fact many regional system are run without any assimilation at all; comparison of results across systems is difficult to impossible Current ROSES 07 WLS project is focused on Global NWP
Global NWP Metrics • Anomaly correlation coefficients • Controversial: • Gold standard for NWP systems; objective • Not widely understood outside NWP community, difficult to sell to stake-holders • RMS errors • Similar to ACC diagnostics • Better suited for the tropics • Adjoint sensitivity (e.g. total energy norms) • Short-range focus • Computational advantage • Other metrics?
