Geometry Quiz 6 December 7, 2010
Bellringer (reteaching)10 minutes Solve the following equations: • 15b - 10 = 50 • 7x + 3 = 2x + 8 • -11a = 66
MISSING QUIZZES If you are missing Quiz 5 or Quiz 6. You MUST take your quiz before Xmas break. Failure to take your quiz before Wednesday, DECEMBER 15 will result in ZERO. This is an in-class assignment for your binder. Label it QUIZ 6 Discussion 12/7 and place in class work section.
PUT IN BINDER!!!! 1.The temperature in Chicago was -5 below at 6am. Five hours later, the temperature dropped an additional 15 degrees. What is the new temperature? -5 + (-15) = -20 degrees
IN-CLASS WORK • 2. Draw a horizontal number line on your paper with zero in the middle. Label dot on -2 and dot on 6. Label dot on -2 point A and dot on 6 point B. What is the midpoint of segment AB?
A B Midpoint = pt.1 + pt.2 2 = -2 + 6 2 = 4 = 2 2
3. What is the value of the expression -2x⁵, when x = -3? • -2 (-3)⁵ = Remember order of operations Should you multiply -2 * -3 then raise to 5th power? So 6⁵ = 7776 Should you do -3⁵ then multiply by -2? (-3) x (-3) x (-3) x (-3) x (-3) = (-243) (-2)(-243) = 486
4. What value of x satisfies the equation 2(x-3) = 4x + 10? 2(x-3) = 4x +10 Operation distribution 2*x + 2(-3) = 4x + 10 2x – 6 = 4x +10 Combine like terms -2x = -2x -6 = 2x + 10 Combine numbers -10 = -10 -16 = 2xSolve for x 2 2 ⇛ -8 = x
5. Kerry scores 15 points in the first game, 22 in the second game, 8 in the third, and 17 in the fourth game. In the 5th game, he was shut down for 0. What is his scoring average after 5 games? Find average by adding numbers then dividing by the amount of numbers. 15 + 22 + 8 + 17 + 0 = 62 = 12.4 pts/game 5
5 -2 -2 -8 B A 6. A (-2, -8) 7. B (5,-2)
Find midpoint of AB Midpoint formula= (x₁ + x₂) , (y₁ + y₂) = (x, y) 2 2 • Locate points • Assign points as pt1 and pt2 • Label point1 as (x₁ , y₁) and point2 as (x₂ ,y₂) • Insert into formula
Find midpoint of AB • A (-2, -8) B ( 5, -2) pt.1 ⇛(x₁ , y₁) pt.2 ⇛(x₂ , y₂) Midpoint = (x₁ + x₂) , (y₁ + y₂) = (x, y) 2 2 =(-2 + 5 ) , (-8 + -2) 2 2 =(3/2, -10/2) = (3/2, -5) or (1.5,-5)
Find the Distance of AB Distance formula = √ [(x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁) ²] • Locate points • Assign points as pt1 and pt2 • Label point1 as (x₁ , y₁) and point2 as (x₂ ,y₂) • Insert into formula
Find the Distance of AB • A (-2, -8) B ( 5, -2) (x₁ , y₁) (x₂ , y₂) • Distance = √ [(x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁) ²] = √ (5 – (-2))² + (-2 – (-8))² = √ (7)² + (6)² = √ 49 + 39 = √85
10. What is difference between midpoint and distance of a line? • Midpoint is the middle point of a line and the distance of a line is the length from one point to another on the line.
Cooperative notes Students will work in pairs to complete graphic organizer/notes on angle relationships. (30 minutes).
