  2. Racism • Racism interferes with how we define someone as a person. • We now have a system that incarcerates African Americans twice as long as whites who are charged with identical crimes. • In some cases, white suspects are literally allowed to get away with murder. • Even in 2014 this continues as Jordan Davis a 17 year old African American was killed by Michael Dunn a white male whom was not even convicted of murder.

  3. Reproductive Rights • 1973 Roe V Wade case legalizing abortion, giving woman rights • to their bodies • Many still argue, who should control the genetic destiny of mankind • Decline in Abortion Clinics in U.S • Are women treated equally as “a person” of the United States?

  4. IQ and the Death Penalty • 2014 : Freddie Hall v. Florida • - What IQ level determines full responsibility • for crimes? • - In FL, it is a result of 65-70. • Should standard law apply to mentally • handicapped criminals? • Is the death penalty “cruel and unusual • punishment” under the 8th amendment? • Who receives “personhood-plus” or lesser • personhood in American culture?

  5. Who is a Person? • An ongoing argument in American thinking • Democratic argument is the “ceaseless agitation” that produces the “true advantages of democracy.” • -Alexis de Tocqueville • Legal , political, and societal action evolve the argument and its results.
