Michele K. Wolff, UMBC LaToya White, Health Leads Outputs to Outcomes: A Preliminary Assessment of Community Impact through Community Voice
UMBC Service-Learning Impact Survey • Adapted from: Learn and Serve America Community Partner Survey of the American Association of Community Colleges • 46 community partners invited • 33 responses (72% response rate)
Partner Organization Characteristics • 58% of respondents are education-based organizations • 18% serve vulnerable populations/represent individuals with disabilities • 53% identify as Nonprofit • 43% identify as School-based/K-12 • 46% identify as medium sized based on budget and number of clients served ( with 27% serving up to 100 clients annually)
Assessment Process Methods of Partner Engagement • Focus Group: focused on initial intent and content of survey • Email: focused on question/survey review and revision; this method was used several times throughout the year to get on-going feedback for survey revisions • On-line survey: for data collection • Face-to-face meetings: focused on data interpretation and survey revisions Benefits of Partner Voice • Survey revisions can better capture the work and impact of students • Findings also reflect the desired learning of community partners, increasing potential for meaningful use
Findings Outcomes: • 92% of respondents indicated students had direct service contact with clients • Because of direct student contact, organizational capacity to serve was enhanced or there would have been no service delivered at all • Categories of impact: educational achievement, health-related outcomes, socialization of vulnerable/marginalized populations • Substantive, on-going partner engagement to ensure community voice
Next Steps • Begin to address limitations of survey (e.g., explore other instruments; use more rigorous analysis methods) • Continue on-going dialogue with partners to ensure community voice • Continually revise survey questions to reflect partner feedback • Implement survey in subsequent academic semesters
