    4. The foundation is ‘ONE’ – Yes – it is ‘exclusive’ – Yes – it is ‘narrow’ – Yes – it understands these are TRUTH – THIS is the foundation that we demand of ourself and of each other… ? ONE BODYThe foundation is ‘ONE’ – Yes – it is ‘exclusive’ – Yes – it is ‘narrow’ – Yes – it understands these are TRUTH – THIS is the foundation that we demand of ourself and of each other… ? ONE BODY

    5. ONE Body [church] 1. One body. The one body is the church of Christ (Eph. 1:22-23). It is the living functioning organism through which Christ works. Jesus only promised to build one church (Mt. 16:18).   This is the ‘universal’ church – the body made up of BELIEVERS that have been added ‘together’. This ‘body’ is made up of individual believers united to Christ. It is NOT made up of ‘congregations’ – nor groups of congregations (denominations). The FUNCTIONING aspect: Distributive – as each member does its part. Collective – is found in a local group of such that function by common oversight (elders) and pooling of resources. 1. One body. 6. ONE Body Spirit 2. One Spirit. Understood here in two ways – A. The Holy Spirit. He was active in creation (Gen. 1:2). He revealed the word to the apostle and prophets (1 Cor. 2:10; Eph. 3:5). By His instructions the church is led (Rom. 8:12-17).   B. A common ‘spirit’ – disposition of believers Note: The word spirit has been capitalized by the translators, causing us to think of the Holy Spirit. If the word should not be capitalized, then we have a reference to the spirit or disposition which characterizes the life of the church. ? One HOPE2. One Spirit. Understood here in two ways – A. 7. ONE Body Spirit Hope 3. One hope. The Christian hopes for (desires and expects) an in heritance in heaven (1 Pet. 1:3-5; Eph. 1:18; Col. 1:5). The idea of an earthly inheritance (the “blessed hope” of premillennialism) is unknown in the New Testament.   Hope – if future based – that which is ‘seen’ is not hope. Hope – desire PLUS expectation. This is the SAME for all believers – of all generations. This hope is bound up in Christ, his death and resurrection, our forgiveness in Him, and our gathering together to Him. ? ONE LORD3. One hope. 8. ONE Body Spirit Hope Lord 4. One Lord.   Interesting that such was used of ‘God’ in the OT and is almost (with few exceptions) used of JESUS in the NT. For a Jew to do this would have been unthinkable UNLESS he recognized the deity of Jesus.   Lord – in its basic meaning has to do with position and authority. When used of earthly relationships – a ruler, a superior. When used of Jesus it retains that but enlarges it to universal limits. Jesus Christ is lord (Acts 2:36). BUT He is LORD of LORDS – Rev. 17:14 This is true because he possess ALL authority – Mtt. 28:18-19 His word is not only the binding rule – but will be the basis of judgment – John 8:48 He is the son of God (Mt. 16:16), possessing authority to direct us (Mt. 28:18). He is the head of the church (Col. 1:18). ? ONE Faith4. One Lord.   Interesting that such was used of ‘God’ in the OT and is almost (with few exceptions) used of JESUS in the NT. 9. ONE Body Spirit Hope Lord Faith 5. One faith. The one faith is the completed revelation of the will of God, the gospel (Jude 3; Gal. 1:23; Rom. 1:15-16). The word faith may be used in either an objective (as here) or subjective sense. The ‘objective’ means that which is to be believed, the word of God, the teaching from Jesus. The faith which is revealed --   The faith (belief, subjective sense) of the saints is based on the one faith (objective sense, Rom. 10:17).   When OUR faith is based upon THE faith we have the SAME faith – and hence there is ONE FAITH. ? It is a burial in water (Rom. 6:3-4; Acts 8:38; 10:47). Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38), and puts one into Christ where all spiritual blessings are enjoyed (Gal. 3:26-27; Eph. 1:3). In OT – God most often ‘Deity’ – not ‘the Father’… After the incarnation – Usual = the Father, as here.   This is Jehovah (the Lord) (Ps. 83:18).   He is the creator and sustainer of the universe, the one who commands all men to repent, and who has appointed a day of judgment (Acts 17:22-31).   God is over all (transcendent), through all (immanent), and in all (dwelling in His people, Eph. 2:22; 2 Cor. 6:16) 7.
