PhotonMonitors - Beamline Radiation Detection System

PhotonMonitors is a beamline radiation detection system. It monitors radiation levels in the range of 0.01 mrem/hr to 100 mrem/hr using a large area ion chamber, electrometer, HVPS, and A/D converter. The system provides digital data and low voltage output, and can be connected to the HPI 6030/6012 display/controller. Cost per beamline is approximately $5500.

  1. PhotonMonitors • A detector will monitor each beamline • Range is from 0.01 mrem/hr to 100 mrem/hr • Enclosure contains a large area ion chamber, • electrometer, HVPS and A/D converter • Only digital data and low voltage are on the cable • out to the 6012 display • Cost is about $5500 per beamline Hardware RP has decided on the HPI 6030/6012 for monitoring gammas SSRL Top-Off BCS Review February 15, 2008

  2. PhotonMonitors • Updates radiation level, alarms and • RS232 output at 1 Hz • Relay is tripped when level exceeds • trip level or detector is disconnected • Alarm also lights LED; sets off buzzer • Alarm resets after 10s when level is ok • Trip level, alarm actions, etc. are set • by hidden front panel switches Hardware (continued) The HPI 6012 is a digital display/controller for the 6030 SSRL Top-Off BCS Review February 15, 2008

  3. PhotonMonitors • This display is the old BSOIC display • Tripped detectors can set • audible and color alarms • Event Log entries • history buffer entries Software Display the current dose rate for all ion chambers at 1Hz • Clicking on a detector shows detailed • information SSRL Top-Off BCS Review February 15, 2008

  4. PhotonMonitors • Software reads RS232 • output through a • terminal server and • into an IOC • This is a snapshot • of real data • captured using • a check source Software (continued) Display more information about a selected ion chamber SSRL Top-Off BCS Review February 15, 2008

  5. PhotonMonitors • Actual data from • January 22 fill • Data saved at 1Hz Archival Information Display and correlate with historical information • Ion chamber was • on top of BL1 hutch • Photon monitor data • can be correlated to • > 3000 parameters SSRL Top-Off BCS Review February 15, 2008

  6. PhotonMonitors Schedule Have two detector/displays in house Detectors have been calibrated by HPI Software is essentially finished RP will do baseline testing and cleared-floor testing baseline testing at two beamlines in a few weeks cleared-floor testing during AP periods in Feb/Mar Once testing is finished, orders can go out for remainder Vendor can deliver 15 weeks ARO may get two more detectors earlier Hardware installation schedule will be discussed by others SSRL Top-Off BCS Review February 15, 2008
