1 Corinthians 15: 1-8 1 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
1 Corinthians 15: 14-19 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
“If Christ is not risen… (1 Cor. 15:14-19) • Our faith is useless; we are still in our sins
“If Christ is not risen… (1 Cor. 15:14-19) • Our faith is useless; we are still in our sins • The apostles are false witnesses about God
“If Christ is not risen… (1 Cor. 15:14-19) • Our faith is useless; we are still in our sins • The apostles are false witnesses about God • We Christians are to be pitied more than all men!

‘Extraordinary Evidence’ that Jesus Rose from the Dead? • Eyewitness Accounts • Fulfillment of Prophecy
Critical question: Was Jesus physically raised (real physical body; flesh/blood) from the dead on the 3rd day, leaving behind an empty tomb?
Only one person claimed in advance that he would be raised from the dead on the third day.
John 2: 18-22 18The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
Matthew 28: 11-15 11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
Justus Martyr, a Christian from Samaria charges Trypho, a Jew, c. 150 AD, as follows: “You have sent chosen and ordained men throughout all the world to proclaim that, a godless and lawless heresy had sprung from one Jesus, a Galilean deceiver, whom we crucified, but his disciples stole him by night from the tomb, where he was lain when unfastened from the cross, and now deceive men by asserting that he has risen from the dead and ascended to heaven. (ANF v. 1, p.253)
Eyewitness Accounts Luke 24:36-43 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Eyewitness Accounts John 20: 24-27 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Eyewitness Accounts Acts 1:3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

Christian teacher, Origen of Alexandria, c. 185-225 AD, responds to the objections of Celsus, a pagan critic. Celsus attacked the Christian claim of Jesus’ resurrection as “a juggler’s trick”. Origen’s Response: “A clear and unmistakable proof of the fact (resurrection of Jesus) I hold to be the undertaking of His disciples, who devoted themselves to the teaching of a doctrine which was attended with dangers to human life, - a doctrine which they would not have taught with such courage had they invented the resurrection of Jesus from the dead…who also…not only prepared others to despise death, but were the first themselves to manifest their disregard for its terrors.” (Origen, Against CelsusANV v.4, p.454) Consider: If indeed the apostles stole the body from the tomb and falsified the story of Jesus’ resurrection, WHY would they travel throughout the world risking their lives and calling others to do likewise all to proclaim a false messiah?
Hebrews 6:1-2 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
Souls of the Dead Wait in Hades (Sheol) • Luke 16:22-26 Lazarus and the rich man “in Hades” • Psalm 16:10 “You will not abandon me to Sheol” • Acts 2:27 “You will not leave my soul in Hades” Sheol = Hades (Hebrew) (Greek)
The Dead Will Be Raised 1Corinthians 15:50-53 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
The Dead Will Be Raised John 5:28-29 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voiceand come out —those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.”
Harvest at the End Matthew 12:41-42 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

Where Does it Say That? Luke 24:44-47 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Second Major ProphecyJonah 1 & 2 Jonah 2: 1-2 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me.From deep in the realm of the dead [Sheol] I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
