  2. The ascension comes with a warning and a promise

  3. 50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted • up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, • he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped • him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they • stayed continually at the temple, praising God. • --Luke 24.50-53 NIV

  4. 1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began • to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after • giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. • 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period • of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not • leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which • you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in • a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” • 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” (cont’d) • --Acts 1.1-10 NIV

  5. 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the • Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when • the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” • 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud • hid him from their sight. • 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men • of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? • This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” • --Acts 1.1-10 NIV

  6. We are now responsible with building the kingdom of God

  7. 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” • --Acts 1.4-5 NIV

  8. Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” • --Acts 1.6 NIV

  9. As you sent me into the world, I have sent • them into the world. • --John 17.18

  10. 31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with • him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep • on his right and the goats on his left. • 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for • you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave • me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, • I was a stranger and you invited me in… (cont’d) • --Matthew 25.31-40 NIV

  11. 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked • after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ • 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you • hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ • 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the • least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ • --Matthew 25.31-40 NIV

  12. The promise is that we • are not alone

  13. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. --John 16.7 NIV

  14. “You ascended from before our eyes, and we • turned back grieving, only to find you in our hearts.” • --St. Augustine--

  15. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on • you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, • and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” • --Acts 1.8 NIV

  16. 54When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were • furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” • --Acts 7.54-56 NIV

  17. The Lord takes his place in court; • he rises to judge the people • --Isaiah 3.13 NIV

  18. 1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus • Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, • and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. • --1 John 2.1-2 NIV

  19. "Right now do you feel ugly, like a failure, condemned? Are you • a Christian? Do you believe in the ascension? ... Do you believe that Jesus Christ is in heaven and your advocate before the Father? • Do you understand that verdict up there? Then do you realize, • therefore, you are perfect in Him? To the degree that verdicts here • will be inconsequential. What people think will be inconsequential. • What people say will be inconsequential..." • --Tim Keller--

  20. 3“I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, • I do not even judge myself. 4 My conscience is clear, but that does • not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.” • --1 Corinthians 4.3-5 NIV
