4 Connective Tissue Vocabulary • ground substance – fluid component of connective tissue • matrix – extracellular fibers and ground substance • connective tissue proper – adipose and tendons • supporting connective tissue – cartilage and bone • fibroblasts – only cells that are always present in connective tissue proper • macrophages – large ameboid cells; defense • adipocytes – fat cells • mesenchymal cells – stem cells • melanin – pigment • mast cells – mobile cells filled with histamine and heparin
