  1. Matter, The Atom, & Subatomic Particles

  2. Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space is matter. A collection of matter with all the same chemical properties is known as a pure substance. A collection of matter with different properties is known as a mixture.

  3. Properties of Matter Physical Properties can be observed or measured. density, color, odor, taste boiling point, melting point Chemical Properties relate to a substance’s ability to bond chemically. flammability, reactivity

  4. Changes in Matter Physical Changesalter the form but not the chemical properties of matter. cutting, smashing freezing, boiling

  5. Changes in Matter Chemical Changesalter the chemical structure so new chemical properties are observed. burning, color change heat change, new smell

  6. Pure Substances Pure substances come in two varieties. A collection of the same exact atom is known as an element. A collection of atoms bound together in exactly the same way is a compound.

  7. Mixtures Mixtures also come in two varieties. If the collection looks the same throughout, it is called homogeneous. If the collection has a different composition in some areas, it is called heterogeneous.

  8. Classifying Matter

  9. The Atom The smallest possible piece of an element is known as an atom. A single atom has the same properties as a collection of many of those atoms.

  10. Inside an Atom All atoms are made from the same three subatomic particles but in different number combinations. 1.673 x 10-24 9.11 x 10-28 1.675 x 10-24
