The effects of Gasoline on Aiptasia Group 4: Joon Chung Jimmy Wesman Heather Hollembeak Sebastian Camacho Nauman Chandry Will Quartell
Background Information • Problem: Many boater’s leak fuel into the ocean which may harm coral reefs. • We want to simulate this occurrence in our tank to see if the symbiosis between aiptasia and zooxanthellae is disrupted
Hypotheses • H0: The addition of gasoline will not affect zooxanthellae density in aiptasia. • HA: The addition of gasoline will reduce zooxanthellae density in aiptasia.
Clarification Bleaching is a descriptive term
Procedure • November 1- We added .64 ml of 87 octane gasoline to the tank and turned the filter off. (according to CEAA) • November 8- Originally supposed to add .64 ml more • November 15- Decide whether to add more gasoline and if so how much? (Take into account Thanksgiving Holiday)
Procedure Continued • Cell count using hemocytometer • Chlorophyll extraction and measurement using acetone • Protein concentration using Bradford method
Things to think about • Statistical Significance • Hawaiian Species • Unwanted Aiptasia • A mollusk walks up to a sea cucumber and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSU83KfjcWE
