  3. About the city of Corinth • Port city, on an isthmus • Key city, rebuilt by Julius Caesar • Prosperous city • Idolatrous city • Site of Isthmian games • Worldly city • Known to be immoral (Gk: korinthiazomai)

  4. About Paul’s letters • Written by Paul personally, or through a scribe • Occasioned by reports of disciples from the Corinth church

  5. About Paul’s letters • Written by Paul out of concern: to teach and exhort • 1 Corinthians written from Ephesus, A.D. 54-55. • 2 Corinthians written from Macedonia, A.D. 55-56. • Paul wrote them 1 or 2 other (lost) letters.

  6. About the Corinthians • Had Jews and Gentiles • Talented and gifted Problematic • Divisions – loyalties, lawsuits • Worldliness • Immorality (incest, adultery) • Disorder in worship • Tendency to be arrogant
