  2. Health and Hygiene “ Arogyame Mahabhagyam” When we say “ Arogyam” we refer to being in good health – ‘which is greatest wealth’

  3. HEALTH • What do we mean by ‘being healthy’? • (WHO) Complete physical, mental and social well being, and not merely an absence of disease.

  4. HEALTH • Physical Health: Maintaining balance between various organs. • Mental Health: Presence of positive characteristics in other words free from depression, anxiety, and psychological problems.

  5. HUMAN BODY IS DIVINE • ‘Deho Devalayo Prokto’ ‘The body is the temple of God’ • ‘Paropakarartham Idam Shareeram’ ‘The body is a wonderful gift given by God to render service to mankind’. (A story of dry leaves)

  6. Therefore good care should be taken to keep the body clean and healthy. • Without good health we cannot: 1) Pray or Meditate 2) Perform asanas & pranayama 3) Carry out service to mankind 4) Control our senses of mind

  7. Good health is beneficial not only for the individual but to the family and community.

Balvikas gurus are referred to as gardeners – they are given the noble task of tending the young saplings, nurturing it with good thoughts, words, deeds – and guarding it so as to reach upwards towards the Divine life – ‘The good life’ • Bhagwan’s Saying: ‘Start early, drive slowly, reach safely’ so the correct time to start telling the children from their tender age itself, so that they build up a good, healthy life.

  9. Man is made of 5 sheaths. The outer most one is the “ANNAMAYA KOSHA”-the food sheath. Thus the importance of having the correct quality and quantity of food can’t be over-stated

The child’s pattern of eating and food habits during early years tends to stay with the child. 1) Offer the food to God ‘to make it a prasad’ 2) Avoid spilling… “Annam Brahma” (an incident in the life of Shri Ramana Maharishi) 3) Importance of Mastication • Remember God for His mercy-for the food he gives-because without food nothing goes right.

  11. HEALTHY FOOD • The eating programme consists of 3 meals a day with no snacks in between. • Stress the need or importance of ‘Breakfast’. Should neither over-eat,, nor under-eat (upamanyu story) • The food should be a balance food with fruits, proteins, cereals, bread and milk.

  13. To be Avoided by Children: • Roadside food • Junk food • Drinking impure water • Eating without washing hands • Eating rajasik and tamasik food

  15. Swami says that Aahara is not just the food partaken through the mouth. It even includes all that we take in through our senses (i.e.,) eyes, ears, etc. • Children should give equal importance to outdoor activities, exercise and games. (As means of relaxation and recreation).

  16. HYGIENE • Hygiene is the name of the science that deals with promotion and preservation of health. • Promoting hygiene in schools, community, workplace and homes prevents many infectious diseases. Eg: Worm infestation, Diarrhoea, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis (Jaundice) etc.

  17. Hygiene in day to day life: 1) Clean body 2) Clean Habits 3) Pure thoughts • Hygiene should start at home: 1) Washing hands.( reduces Diarrhoea disorders) 2) Food hygiene 3) General hygiene

  18. GENERAL HYGIENE: i) care of toilets and wash basins. ii) safe disposal of waste iii) Care of pets and domestic animals iv) Water Storage.

  19. DO’s • PERSONAL HYGIENE: • Dental hygiene(Brushing daily-the way) • Skin care • Hair & Nails • Feet • Hand wash • Changing inner garments daily. DON’T s • Nail biting • Finger sucking

  20. FOOD HYGIENE: 1)Proper washing of vegetables, fruits & grains 2)Proper cooking • Improving hygiene leads to decrease of infectious diseases

  21. “Namasmarana” or prayer cleanses our ‘Mind’ just as we soap and water to make our body and clothes clean. JAPA DHYANA Cleanses our mind and removes the unwanted desires and dirt SOAP WATER • We have to thank God for everything-even for a small chocolate that we get

  22. Proper use of eyes:’Nayanam Pradhanam’ • Man’s eyes are the index to his mind. • Love, anger, greed, all emotions are expressed through eyes. • This wonderful gift of God should be used only for seeing good things.

  23. Using green vegetables, leafy vegetables, drumstick, curry leaves, papaya-the eyes can be taken care of well. • Ears: Loud noise, using sharp objects to clean-can harm the ear drum. If problem arises consult the ENT Doctor for check-up.

  25. Skin & Hair: To take bath daily is a healthy practice. Bathing in clean water refreshes our body and mind. Regular hair wash is necessary to keep away dandruff and hair-lice.

  26. Good sleep and prayer: • Bath cleanses the body, wholesome food nourishes the body, sound sleep refreshes and invigorates the body. Similarly, prayer cleanses the mind, nourishes it and gives peace.

  27. Just as we bathe, take food and go to sleep at regular times, prayers must also be done at regular times 1)On rising in the morning 2)During taking bath 3)Before all meals 4)Before undertaking any task, large or small including study. 5)At bed-time before going to sleep.

  28. Trikarana Shuddi: Healthy body-Good work Healthy mind-Good thoughts Healthy inner self-Promotes sacred ideas. UNITY, PURITY, DIVINITY

Say Yes or No (If No give the correct answer) • Over eating and less eating are both bad. • Food alone doesn’t nourish our body, even games too. • Water should not be allowed to stagnate around the house. • Prayer is important in our day to day activities. • Too much of watching TV and computers is harmful to eyes • Any food item should be kept covered.
