  1. Status for NAG-CITY group Hans de Beer NAG Business meeting Hurtigruten, May 2, 2013

  2. Outline • NAG-CITY activities • workshop hydrogeology Odense • budget and plans • partner initiatives • COST SUB-URBAN • status • parties • organisation • work plan and budget

  3. Workshop Urban GroundwaterInformation Management City of Odense, January 15-16, 2013 Purpose: to get a better understanding of the city-partners’ present handling of hydrogeological information and to discuss wishes and possibilities for future handling.

  4. Main workshopconclusions and recommendations • Challenges for City Managers: • new activities affect ecosystems; assessment and monitoring; • digital availability and storage of information and models in standard formats; • responsibility for systematic data collection; • climate adaptation requires improved subsurface information. • Needs for green/blue solutions: • urban design affects and is dependent on subsurface variability; • systematic (sub)surface information collection; • systematic groundwater mapping and monitoring, potential contaminants.

  5. Main workshop conclusions and recommendations • Needs for heat storage and cooling: • improved legislation and data collection (many countries “Wild West”) • Why urban groundwater monitoring: • Water Framework Directive, ground stability, protection of infrastructure and heritage require new approaches • Status geological and hydrogeological modelling: • progress varies per country • shallow subsurface information essential and not collected before • surface geophysics and new guidelines required • Poster presentation from NAG-City partners at seminar “Groundwater and Cultural Heritage”, May 14-15, Trondheim.

  6. Conclusions Water relatedproblems are very important for the cities. High unforeseen costs due to unknown (hydro)geology. Knowledge about cityneeds and challenges is essential. • Solutions require not only knowledge of the subsurface, but also how the subsurface and the processes within are influenced by human activities. • Proper data management requires improved legislation, drilling authorisation, local administration and systematic data collection.

  7. Plans and budgets Activities will be linked to COST Action Sub-Urban. Core group remains. Aim to new project proposal Horizon 2020. Specific NAG-CITY budgets currently €10-15k (2013) per partner.

  8. Partner initiatives Local projects strengthen the work of NAG-CITY and COST Action SUB-URBAN. • Pretty much all partners have (funded) projects that underpin NAG-CITY. • Examples: Odense project: 2 year fully funded (GEUS, Odense municipality, Water Company), 2013-14. Oslo subsurface project: 4 year multidisciplinary project initiative to improve subsurface data management, availability and use (Oslo municipality, Ingelöv Eriksson), 2013-2017. Clyde-Urban Super-Project (CUSP)

  9. SUB-URBAN A European network to improve understanding and use of the ground beneath our cities Networking and learning opportunities offered by a unique consortium of geological survey organisations (which provide subsurface data, information and knowledge), city representatives (which both provide and require knowledge and information), and the academia (providing science). Geological surveys work in a specific country or region, city representatives work in a specific city. Knowledge sharing with sister organisations is important, and is strengthened by an incentive such as this project.

  10. SUB-URBAN Key dates and numbers COST Action TU1206. Kick-off meeting April 9, 2013. Approved Grant work plan and budget at April 22, 2013. First financial period June 1, 2013- May 31, 2014 Allocated budget year 1: € 129.000,- • COST:http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/tud/Actions/TU1206
