LOCATION • There are 12 states in the Midwest, five of them border four of the great lakes. • Cities in the Midwest with at least 10,000 inhabitants as of the official 2010 Census are: • Chicago, Illinois; 2,695,598 • Indianapolis, Indiana; 829,718 • Columbus, Ohio; 787,033 • Land forms: • Mount Rushmore • Badlands • Black Hills • Resources: • Mississippi River • Great Lakes • Minneapolis is Northwest of Chicago • Chicago is west of Lake Michigan. • The latitude and longitude of Chicago, Illinois is: • 41° 51' 0" N / 87° 39' 0" W

PLACE • Customs, religions, ethnic groups: • Customs: Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, New Years, and Halloween • Religions: Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Jewish, Muslim and other faiths • Ethnic Groups: Irish, German, English, Polish, Italian • Major Resources: • Coal: Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, and Michigan. • Oil: some in South Illinois. • Iron Ore: Minnesota and Northern Michigan • Farming • Major Landforms: • Chimney Rock, Nebraska • Badlands, SD • Monument Rocks, KS • Great Lakes

  5. HUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL-INTERACTION • Economic Issues: Plant closings and significant worker layoffs in plant closings in the automotive and other manufacturing industries. • How climate affected settlement of the Midwest: • Good growing season • Less people went up north in colder regions

MOVEMENT • Why people chose to live where they have in the region: • People needed to farm or live near manufacturing jobs • How goods transported to, within and out of the region: • Shipping through the Great Lakes • Train • Trucking • Interesting traditions or customs: Friday Fish Fries, Bratwurst, Deer Hunting in the fall

  7. REGIONS • Major Tourist Attractions: • Mt. Rushmore, SD - Faces of 4 US presidents carved into the mountain that are more than 60 feet high. • Gateway Arch, MO – Tallest human made monument at 630 feet tall. • Crazy Horse, SD – Man made sculpture even bigger than Mt. Rushmore. • Other Unique Characteristics: Much of the land was formed by glaciers. Prairie covers most of the Midwest.
