University of Debrecen: the Research University • One of Hungary’s five research universities; • More than half of the academic staff have PhD; • 30 members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS); • 12 research groups sponsored by the HAS; • 25 doctoral schools (highest number in Hungary); • 854 PhD students; • ~ 150-200 new PhD degrees per annum (156 in 2007); • R&D income 4-4.5 billion HUF/year (16-18 million €).

4. IP policy at the University of Debrecen - History • Established in 2001 – no responsible body was appointed for the protection and commercial development • 2006 – new version was adopted, but still no responsible body for IP management. Improvements on ownership issues and in managing research collaborations. • 2008 - The IP policy being in effect today was revised by the TTO of the University. • - The TTO is responsible for managing IP arisen at the University. • - Still have deficiencies, but it’s under revision. Continuous revision based on feedbacks and performance is critical!

5. The TTO has supported the realization of the short-term strategic goals of the University of Debrecen Establishment of UD TTO! • Building up a clear, transparent IP management system • Creation of the knowledge map of the University • Support of university-industry cooperations • Strengthen business competence and foster exploitation • Facilitate the spread of innovative thinking among university citizens Based on the knowledge map it is possible to proactively screen the research projects and generate new ones by involving business partners.
