  2. Discipleship Defined Discipleship “Means more in the New Testament than a mere pupil or learner. It is an adherent who accepts the instructions given to him and makes it his rule of conduct.” Jesus had disciples in the sense that they believed and made His teaching the very basis of their conduct.   3. An Athlete • How Jesus exemplified an athlete: • Exhibited self-control: 1 Peter 2:21-23, Matthew 26:39 • Competed according to the rules: Hebrews 4:15, 1 Peter 2:22 • Ran to win: Hebrews 12:2

  4. An Athlete • As an athlete, we must: • Be Committed To Rigorous Training: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 • We must have self-control: Galatians 5:23, 2 Peter 1:6 • Exercise towards godliness: 1 Timothy 4:7-8

  5. An Athlete • As an athlete, we must: • Compete according to the rules: 2 Timothy 2:5 • We must live lawfully to win: Matthew 7:21-23, 2 John 9 • If we break the rules, we can be disqualified: 1 Corinthians 9:27, James 2:10

  6. An Athlete • As an athlete, we must: • Run to win! • Run to obtain the prize: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 • Run with endurance: Hebrews 12:1-2 • Press toward the goal: Philippians 3:12-14

  7. A Soldier • How Jesus exemplified a soldier: 2 Timothy 2:3-4 • Endured hardship: Mathew 26:47, 56, 69-75, 27:26-31, 38-43 • Was not entangled with affairs of this life: Luke 2:49, 9:58 • Sought to please His Commander: John 4:34, Matthew 26:39

  8. A Soldier • As a good soldier, we must: • Endure Hardship: 2 Timothy 2:3, 3:12, Matthew 10:22 • Not be entangled with affairs of life: 2 Timothy 2:4, Luke 8:14, 9:57-62, 1 John 2:15-17

  9. A Soldier • As a good soldier, we must: • Seek to please our commander: 2 Timothy 2:4 • Jesus is our captain: Hebrews 2:10 • Our greatest desire should be to please our captain: 2 Corinthians 5:9-10, Colossians 1:10

  10. A Soldier • As a good soldier, we must: • Obey commands: • We must be obedient: Matthew 7:21, Luke 6:46, Hebrews 5:8-9 • Disobedience will be punished: 2 Thessalonians 1:8, John 3:36

  11. A Soldier • As a good soldier, we must: • Be prepared for battle: 1 Corinthians 14:8 • Recognize the enemy: 2 Corinthians 2:11, 1 Peter 5:8 • Prepare to fight: 1 Peter 3:15, 2 Timothy 2:15

  12. A Soldier • As a good soldier, we must: • Be well equipped: • God provides us with strength to fight this battle: Ephesians 6:10 • We must use ALL of the armor God gives us: Ephesians 6:11-18

  13. A Soldier • As a good soldier, we must: • Get in the fight: • We will never win if we don’t begin: 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 • With God on our side, we can be victorious!
