  1. Gift-giving (Sue & Zane, 1987) -normalizing -instilling hope -psychoeducation -relaxation technique, cd’s -cognitive clarity -empathy

  2. Basic mindfulness components -present focus -accepting attitude -full awareness

  3. Teaching Patients Mindfulness Lit. review by Wallace & Shapiro 2006: -reduce anxiety -decrease anger, higher positive affect and self-esteem -enhanced immunological and physiological functioning -increased sleep quality

  4. Treatments incorporating mindfulness -acceptance and commitment therapy (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999) -dialectical behavior therapy (Linenhan, 1993) -mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (Segal, Williams, & Teasdale, 2002) -mindfulness-based stress reduction (Kabat-Zinn, 1990)

  5. Treatments incorporating mindfulness -reduce anxiety, depression, anger, opiate abuse, and help with coping with chronic pain -reduce suicidal behavior and treat borderline personality disorder

  6. Teaching mindfulness in session -Start with relaxation in session 1 -Sell it and educate patient -Practice mindfulness in sessions 2 + -Discuss and give feedback

  7. Teaching therapists mindfulness -inpatients working with therapists who meditated endorsed fewer psychological symptoms (Grepmair, Mitterlehner, & Nickel, 2008) -increases empathy (Shapiro, Schwartz, & Bonner 1998)
