  1. Unit 2 MATH OF CHEMISTRY AIM: How do we convert units using conversion factors? DO NOW: This is review from Thursday: Try the following questions using Table C 1km = _______________m 800cm = _______________m 9mm= _________________m 2.3 How do we convert units?

  2. WHAT IS CONVERSION FACTOR? • Conversion factor is a fraction that helps us convert from one unit to another Example: 1m = ? Km 1m x 1km = 1km 1000m 1m = 0.001km = 0.001km 1000

  3. HOW DO YOU SET UP A CONVERSION FACTOR? 1 m 100cm 300cm x =300m 100 m Unit you want to end up with Unit you want to Get rid off

  4. REMEMBER! SMALLER #,LARGER UNIT LARGER #,SMALLER UNIT 1 m 100cm

  5. LET’S TRY SOME 1km = 1 1000mm=1 m m 1000m = 1 1 m = 1 km mm 1m = 1 100cm = 1 cm m 1000 1 1 1000 100 1

  6. SET UP How many milliliters (mL) are in 0.851Liters (L)? • Set up a proportion • Units you want to get rid off MUST BE in the DENOMINATOR What you know x (unit you want) (unit you want to get rid of) 0.851L x mL L 1000 1

  7. Set up a proportion • Units you want to get rid off MUST BE in the DENOMINATOR • Multiply out • CHECK! 0.851L x mL L 1000 = 0.851 x mL 1000 = 851mL 1 0.851L =851mL 0.851L = 851 (10-3)L

  8. TRY ON YOUR OWN • Set up a proportion • Units you want to get rid off MUST BE in the DENOMINATOR • Multiply Out • Check! How many meters are in 1.57 km? How many kilograms are in 10.5g?

  9. NEXT Complete the METRIC MANIA Worksheet When you are done, you may work on the following: • CHEMISTRY VOCABULARY JOURNAL - you will be allowed to use this on your quizzes and (some of) your exams
