Overview of DMTF System Virtualization Workgroup for GGF Virtualization BOF Ron Goering, IBM
DMTF System Virtualization and Partitioning SubGroup • DMTF Workgroup with strong participation from IBM, VMWare, Microsoft, HP, Sun, Symantec, Intel, XenSource and others • Weekly calls (Thurs 9 PDT – details on website: http://www.dmtf.org/apps/org/workgroup/redundancy/) • Work ongoing to produce CIM model (CIM profile and associated CIM schema changes) for virtual systems and the virtual resources which compose them. • Scope includes partitioned systems • Leverage SMI-S profiles for storage virtualization • Deliverables: • Terminology Doc (available now) • CIM schema request for changes (with associated MOF) – target 3Q 2006 • CIM Profiles – in progress, deliver 2006 • System Virtualization, Virtual System • Resource Allocation, Resource Capabilities abstract profiles • “Device” profiles: Processor, Memory, Block back disks, file back disks, Venet, VHBA, Removable Media, • Others in second phase • Standards activity will continue through 2006 – goal is to have enough defined to enable implementation begining in 2006
Virtual System Requirements and Use Cases • General Requirements: • Enable management applications which are unaware of virtualization to manage virtual systems, i.e. once a ComputerSystem is created most management operations (list, install, configure) are enabledwithout requiring the management application to understand virtualization. • Make sure appropriate profiles from SMWG, SMI-S and others are applicable • Support the symmetry inherent in multiple layers of virtualization, i.e. a ComputerSystem by addition of virtualization software, could have a role as a “host" for virtual systems. • Model should be general and flexible enough to support known virtualization systems including VMWare VMs, Xen, MSVS, zVM/VMGuest, PowerLPAR, Sun PPAR, HP vPAR and nPar etc. • Support both virtualization and partitioning
Virtual System Requirements and Use Cases • ComputerSystem • Enumerate virtual servers, resources, relationships on a particular platform • Virtual System Lifecycle • Create a Virtual Computer System specifying resources (CPU, disk, I/O) that make up the Virtual System, and attributes about those resources (shared, virtualized, based on what platform resource) • Provide ability for management application to introspect the system at runtime to find out virtualization capabilities and resources supported. • Provide appropriate defaults wherever possible • Have flexible specification mechanism • Optional support for Templates • Delete virtual server and return resources to platform. • Given a Virtual System, change the size of the system or modify the resources that compose virtual system. • Virtual System can clearly host different OSs at different points in time.
Virtual System Requirements and Use Cases • Virtual Resources • Support creation, modification, deletion and inventory of virtual resources • Enable mapping of virtual resources to underlying resources (through as many layers of virtualization as needed) • For example: Customer is notified that particular physical disk is receiving intermittent errors. Customer would like to understand which virtual machines would be effected if the disk failed.
Virtual System Requirements and Use Cases • Farms and Clusters • Enable Management of groups of host systems • Farms, clusters • Host systems cooperating to provide single view of host resources for virtualization • Migration of virtual system from one host to another
GGF and DMTF Cooperation • Use cases of common interest • Help validate relevance of DMTF SVPC work • Leverage SVPC work in higher order scenarios • Application and system provisioning • Utility computing? • Work to align system specification of system selection and system “creation” • Consumer shouldn’t have to know the difference • Give me a ComputerSystem with specified capabilities • May be selection of existing system or “creation” of new system leveraging virtualization capabilities • What Else?
