Early Life * Born March 25, 1942. *Memphis Tennessee. *Born near Memphis zoo, Redbirds, Golf tournament. *Worked at church. *Traveled with father on tour with the church. *Parents Barbra Sigger and Clarence La Vaughn. *Mother left the family when she was six. * Six years later her mother Died. Father died July 27, 1984.
SCHOOL Aretha dropped out She had two kids at ages 15 and 17 After the second baby she decided not to go back to school. She got the Honorary Doctorate of Music by Princeton University. Aretha did not go to college. She has lots more awards from other colleges.
Fame and Career Famous For singing Gospel, jazz, Rhythm, Blues, Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, soul, and Opera. At age 14 she traveled with her father. At age 14 she released her first album. At age 15 she had her first hit song. She has the most Grammy's (18). Has 17 top ten hit singles. She is in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Her role models were Clara Ward and Mahalia Jackson.
Fame and Career Aretha has to do vocal exercises. She warms up her voice before a show. She also has to deal with paparazzi asking if she has cancer. Aretha had to go through some surgery for a pain in her side. Will not tell if she has cancer or not. She also has helped with many events like Childhood diabetes, candies foundation, feeding America, Rain forest foundation, MusiCares, and the Grammy foundation.
Interesting Facts Aretha was apart of civil rights movement. She sang the song “R-E-S-P-E-C-T”. She is alive and is 71 years old. She married Glynn Turman and Ted White. Aretha worked at her fathers church when she was younger.
Legacy Aretha is now preforming for tons of fans all over the world
Purpose I chose Aretha because I was interested in how hard it was for her to become famous with the civil rights movement. Also because she really caught my interest when I found out she didn’t finish school. Aretha had lots of interesting facts that I have learned.
