PRELIMINARY ESPON RESULTS ENVISAGED BY THE TPG • August 2003 a major milestone for ESPON • Key words guiding the delivery to policy development • First impression of preliminary results envisaged for August 2003
KEY WORDS FOR POLICY DEMAND • Economic polarisation/geographical concentration • Territorial structure, balance and polycentrism (at three scales) • Potentials for development • Thematic priorities on innovative system and accessibility, but not only…. • Territorial priorities/typologies to be complemented and modernised • Crossing thematic priorities with territorial typologies can bring new knowledge to policymakers on the territorial diversity of spatial discontinuities
FIRST IMPRESSION PRELIMINARY RESULTS IN AUGUST 2003 • Promising and substantial progress made • A big step forward, however, still a challenge to reach ESPON results • New interesting knowledge is evident for August • Difficult to list preliminary results from IR • Different level of detail • No input yet from third round of projects • Synergies obvious between TPG • Data problems hampering some TPG, however, all TPG should actively try to close data gaps
FIRST IMPRESSION OF PRELIMINARY RESULTS IN AUGUST 2003 • Decide core regional/territorial typologies • Consider different definitions (ex. rural areas) • Minimum requirements for TIA results should be more precise and detailed • Some approaches too sophisticated for August? • High complexity can often not be reflected by indicators and/or be operational for policymakers • Preliminary and operational results! • Common platform can bring more coherent output from the projects
