  1. Maximilien Robespierre 1758-1794 • Early Life: • Born poor • Became a lawyer and was influenced by the Enlightenment’s Jean Jacque Rousseau’s beliefs in democracy. • He became a member of the Estates General in 1789 and became a Government leader. He played an important role in the King’s execution.

  2. Robespierre- The Reign of Terror • Robespierre was elected to the Committee of Public Safety where his power grew. • The Reign of Terror started because of the threat of foreign invasion and the need to maintain unity and order.

  3. Robespierre- Reign of Terror Continued • The Reign of Terror was a time when many people in France were killed because they were considered “enemies of the Revolution” in France. • Robespierre is considered by many to be the leader behind the Reign of Terror because he lead the Committee of Public Safety. This Committee was behind many of the executions.

  4. Robespierre- The End of the Terror • Robespierre once said: “Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible.” • Robespierre’s power was limited after officials decided the Committee of Public Safety no longer needed emergency measures to keep order and prevent invasion. • Robespierre was arrested on July 27, 1794. He had his trial and was executed the next morning.
