  2. Biographical Information • Born: July 11, 1899 in Mount Vernon, New York • Youngest child of Samuel White and Jessie Hart • White lived on a farm in Maine where he kept animals, and some of these creatures made their way into his stories and books • Died: October 1, 1985 (age 86)

  3. Biographical Information • White served in the army before going to college • Graduated from Cornell University in 1921 • While at Cornell, he worked as the editor of The Cornell Daily Sun • At college, White was a member of the Aleph Samachand Quill and Dagger societies and Phi Gamma Delta

  4. Occupations • United Press International and the American Legion News Service in 1921/1922 • Reporter for the Seattle Times in 1922/1923 • White then worked for two years with the Frank Seaman advertising agency as a production assistant and copywriter • Not long after The New Yorkermagazine was founded in 1925, White began submitting manuscripts to it

Awards • 1971: National Medal for Literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web) • 1973: elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters • 1973: Sequoyah Award- Oklahoma and the William Allen White Award- Kansas (The Trumpet of the Swan) • 1977: L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award (Letters of E. B. White) • 1978: Pulitzer Special Award for Literature
