MAT 1234Calculus I Exam 1 Info http://myhome.spu.edu/lauw
Exam 1 • Date: 10/24 Thursday • Time: 1:50??-2:50pm
Exam 1 Information • Section 1.4 – Section 2.4, Maple • Absolutely no share of calculators. Bring extra batteries, extra calculators. It is your responsibility to bring a workable calculator. • Do not store any information in your calculator. • You are expected to use correct notations.
Major Themes • Slope of the tangent line at a point on a graph can be approximated by a limiting process. (The same apply to other rate of change problems in physical sciences.) • The derivative of at a point : • The derivative of as a function: • Limit Laws and Differentiation Formulas
Important Concepts • Left-hand limits and right-hand limits. • exists if • is continuous at a point if • is differentiable at a point if exists
Important Skills • Evaluate limits by using algebra (not estimate) • Finding derivatives using limits and formula
Expectations • Must show the “formula” step when using the product/quotient rules
Major Theorems • Squeeze Theorem (Know the statement and how to apply) • Intermediate Value Theorem (Know the statement) • If is differentiable at a point , then is continuous at (Know the statement and able to point out places where is not differentiable)
Maple • Maple essentials 1,3,5 • Maple commands discussed in class or used in labs • In the past, ….
Review Everything • PowerPoint Slides • Handout • Homework • Quizzes – the notes from the graders • Quizzes – the solutions
Quiz 4 • Make sure I post the solutions…. • It probably will not be returned to you until next week
Exam 1 = 70 points • 6 or 7 questions • Each small mistake may cost you 1 to 2 points • Each big mistake can cost you 3 to 4 points • Each “fatal” mistake can cost you …
Front Matter • Make sure you put down the details of the solutions. No points will be given to answers alone. • No points will be given to graphs or graphical solutions. • Make sure your work is neat, clear and easily readable or you will receive NO credits.
Front Matter • Make sure your solutions are complete and logically presented. Do not skip steps. • Check and Recheck your solutions. Be sure to cross out any scratch works or unwanted materials. • If more than one solution is given, no points will be given to that problem.
Front Matter • Points will be taken off for bad notations or omission of notations. The same mistake can be penalized for multiple times. • If you use the result of a theorem, make sure you state the name of the theorem to justify your solutions. • Allocate your time wisely.
