  2. Journal: Parts of a Narrative • What goes into a good narrative (story). What kinds of things do you like in a narrative? What kinds of things are required for a narrative to make sense/be interesting to read/ to make have a purpose? You have 5 minutes to write.

  3. Think-Pair-Share • Take 1 minute and gather your thoughts. Read over your notes and prepare to discuss with your partner. • Take 2 minutes and discuss your ideas surrounding the prompt with your partner. • Be prepared to discuss with the class.

  4. Objectives! By the end of today we will be able to: • Define “narrative” and explain the different components (parts of) a narrative by completing a journal prompt, participating in class discussion and group activities. • Begin to create our own narratives by participating in group activities. • Analyze our narratives for improvement by participating in group activity. • Identify the different parts of a narrative by completing an underlining activity. • Explain the different parts of a narrative. • Discuss ways to improve narratives by participating in a workshop activity. • Discuss the different parts of a narrative by participating in underlining activity and class discussions.

  5. Definition of a Narrative • A narrative is a story or an account of an event either fictional or non-fictional. • Examples: • Harry Potter • The Hunger Games • Percy Jackson • The Contender • Comic Books • Myths • Fables

  6. Parts of a Narrative: Exposition Exposition

  7. Parts of a Narrative: Exposition • Exposition- the beginning. Where the author or the story teller introduces characters, setting, and basic information.

  9. Parts of a Narrative: Rising Action • Rising Action- the events leading up to the most important point of the story.

  10. Parts of a Narrative: Climax Climax Rising Action Exposition

  11. Parts of a Narrative: Climax • Climax- the most important point of the story, usually also the most exciting part of the narrative. • Examples: • When Batman carries the bomb out of Gotham in “The Dark Knight”. • When Iron Man closes off the portal to the other world in “The Avengers”.

  13. Parts of a Narrative: Falling Action • Falling Action- The events immediately following the climax that lead up to the ending.

  15. Parts of a Narrative: Resolution • Resolution-the ending where everything wraps up and the main conflict/problem of the story is resolved enough to end the story.

  16. Conflict • Every narrative needs a conflict. • A conflict is the main problem of a narrative that the characters try to solve.

  17. Characters • The people/animals/aliens/beings in a narrative that work to solve the conflict. • Your superheroes • Batman • Thor • Zeus • Wonder Woman • Hera

  18. Conflict Model Climax Rising Action Falling Action Exposition Resolution

Underlining Activity • Read the story silently or quietly with a partner. • After reading the story, highlight the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution in different colors. • Make sure you draw a key so I know which color identifies each part of the story. • You may work with a partner but you must complete your own underlining activity. • You have fifteen minutes to complete this activity!!! Use your time wisely!

Story Workshop • Get into groups of 4 (no more than 4) • In your groups, trade your hero stories so everybody has one that is not their own. • Read your partner’s story silently once. • Read a second time highlighting any exposition, underlining any rising action, putting stars around the climax, circling the falling action, and putting brackets around the resolution. • Then write a paragraph telling your partner at least 3 great things about their story so far, 2 things that need improvement, and make 2 suggestions about things they could add.

  21. Homework! • Take the suggestions your partner made and write me a 1st draft of a story. These do not have to be typed. Make sure to include ALL parts of a narrative • Characters • Conflict • Exposition • Rising Action • Climax • Falling Action • Resolution
