Assembly Procedures • Triplet Components installed IP end first, building out • Tunnel space, shielding, and detector interfaces limit access • Interconnects and end closures follow • Procedures initiated at FNAL; tuned / improved and translated after warm fit up experience 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
Load Transfer • Alignment Requirements for the LHC Low-Beta Triplets (LHC-G-ES-0016, 2002). Main points concerning supports: • CERN supplies jacks, cups and other equipment for installation to the tunnel floor. • Lateral load specified as 1 ton • No reference to vacuum load (assumed taken up by the tie-rods). • Decision to use PMPS jacks for the inner triplets (2004?) • Jacks designed to take loads up to 8 tons • Specification for the motorization of the PMPS jacks (IT3200, 2004) • Lateral load specified as 1.3 tons • Anchor specification (date?) • Lateral load specified as 5 tons • All cases referred to assumed vacuum loading 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
Load Transfer • Need for reaction of vacuum loads noted at Cryostat Conceptual Design review (1999) • An action item from the Cryostat Interim Design Review in 2000 • Concern on number of tie bars (2 to 3 recommened) • Concern on protruding into the aisle • Stability of tie rods under vacuum noted at Engr Design Review (2001) 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
Load Transfer • Tunnel jacks assumed to take no load in shear for purposes of tie bars • Full Q1-Q2-Q3 vacuum load (~78kN) reacted through tie bars to DFBX and to ground 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
Load Transfer • 4 M30 tie bars at each interconnect • Vacuum bellows contribution excluded • In Q1-Q2 & Q2-Q3 interconnects stiffened at intermediate location • Stress in tie bars ~27MPa • Safety factor to buckling >6 for Q2-Q3 (longest) • System successfully tested in Bat 181 Apr 2005 • Measurements on deflections at ears during Apr 2005 corroborated by analysis 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
Load Transfer • Ear deflection for vacuum load approx 0.52mm linearly scaled from Q1-Q2-Q3 model used for analyzing failure mode R = 467.4mm 0.1mm R = 525.8mm 0.1mm 42.7kN 1.14mm 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
Vacuum Loads • Measurements have also been taken in IR8R • Resonable agreement w/ calculation when including the stiffness of the jacks 24-25 Inner Triplet Review - J Kerby
